By David, a maskil. Praiseworthy is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is concealed.

By David, a maskil.
1.....(32.1)
The word "MASKIL" is to be considered in the light of the verse: "The path of life is above the intelligent (maskil)" (Mishlei - Proverbs 15:24). When a man looks up to heaven, what is said of him? The way of life is above to the wise, to men who look up to heaven.

It is stated in Pesachim 117a that those Psalms, which have the word "MASKIL" in their superscription, have as their content an "instructive lecture" or "explanation." In the days of our sages, such supplementary instruction would be given to the students by an "instructor" who would thus assist the lecturer. Therefore the theme of Psalm 32 is also "an instruction." The subject of this "instruction" is knowledge of self and a voluntary acknowledgement of our failings before the LORD if we have erred.
