Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff — they comfort me.

Rabbi HIRSCH

1.
geyʾ tzalmoves
...is a valley overshadowed by death, in which all life has vanished and the death and decay of all living things pervade everything round about. This is the gloomiest portrayal of disaster, in which death withholds every ray of light, or of long - awaited salvation, and all things recede hopelessly into the darkness of night.
2.
A. [שֵׁבֶט] (shebet)
...is the chastising rod, suffering
B. [מִשְׁעֵנָה] (mish'enah)
Derived from [שָׁעַן] (shaan) -
"to support", is the “supporting staff”, the “support”.
...
“I take comfort in the knowledge that whatever I receive from You, be it chastisement or support, is indeed Yours and comes solely from You".
